Lynnwood Glen at a glance
Lynnwood Glen is a popular, sought after security estate offering 24/7 security and is bordered by Lynnwood and Lynnwood Park. A paradise for bird lovers and enthusiasts, it is situated a stone's throw from the Strubendam Bird Sanctuary. Conveniently close to schools, shopping centres and main roads and the N1 highway.
When it was first established in 1967, it was the most eastern suburb of Pretoria, but the city has since considerably expanded eastwards and southwards.
Together with Brooklyn and Menlo Park, it was most likely named after American counterparts. Today, these suburbs are known as the old east and boast to have some of the city's most high-end residential properties. St. Alban's College, a prestige boarding and day school for boys, is located in the centre of the suburb.
Established in the late '60s, Lynnwood Glen is the oldest of the trio and has succeeded in maintaining its serene residential character under the tall trees alongside the Moreleta Spruit winding through parts of it. The Struben Dam Bird Sanctuary can also be found within the suburb.
Real estate here mostly comprises large freestanding family homes and a few apartment blocks in gated areas, as well as several local business centres and friendly, old-fashioned neighbourhood shopping centres like Glen Gables. Lynnwood Glen is home to the Varsity College Pretoria campus and isn't too far away from the University of Pretoria, so the neighbourhood is well-suited for student accommodation. Even though it's mainly residential, the suburb neighbours the ever-bustling and developing Menlyn area, which has a variety of modern facilities and amenities.

Struben Dam
The dam was built in the Waterkloof Spruit and contains 108,000 m³. The dam wall is around 6 m high. The precise age of the original dam is unknown, but the dam is estimated to have been built from the 1940s to the 1960s. Maps from 1929 don't show the dam. The dam wall was upgraded in September 1984, and since 1985 it has been used for flood control as well.
Fauna
Bird life is abundant, and a wide variety of fish swim in the reservoir, including banded tilapia, African sharptooth catfish, Canary kurper, carp, and Micropterus.
Flora
The biome near Struben Dam is bakenveld, a transitional habitat between grassland and bushveld. There are also marsh and shoreline areas under the dam wall. River bushwillow, sweet thorn, hook-thorn, and white stinkwood are the main trees found in the reserve.
Amenities
The reserve is ideal for walking, birdwatching, and picnics. There are bathrooms and large lawns on which to relax. The dam is used for fishing. No campfires are allowed.
