Lynnwood at a glance
Although Pretoria is a city where Afrikaans is the prominent language it hasn't stopped American influence in the naming of its many suburbs. Brooklyn and Menlo Park are two examples and so is the highly sought-after residential and commercial area known as Lynnwood. The region was developed in the 1960's and has seen a major expansion in various directions since its inception.
The creation of Lynnwood was an initiative to establish a new suburb on the outskirts of the Pretoria of the time. The design brief was to create a "Garden City." In today's terminology, an estate expanding Pretoria to the east.
The designers of Lynnwood did a truly remarkable job. In contrast to the more regimented grid designs of Waterkloof and Brooklyn, Lynnwood had no straight lines and no parallel streets. It had no square or rectangular stands. It truly was a huge flowing garden.
Lynnwood was lavishly endowed with open spaces. Many of those spaces were developed as mini-parks, invariably colourful playgrounds for children. On a typical Sunday afternoon, families would walk their children from playground to playground, from one end of Lynnwood North to the other.
As an original garden 'estate' the flow has been a masterful success. Flows have always been remarkably balanced. Whether it was traffic flows, or families strolling through the neighbourhood, perhaps walking their dogs or jogging, there are few spaces that are not alive with interest and activity.
Almost half of Lynnwood North's periphery consists of the bird sanctuary in Farmer's Folly, and the University of Pretoria's vast grounds, including sports grounds and an agricultural research area, which all add to the feel of an extended never-ending garden. Lynnwood North is also rather secluded, with only six entrances that connect the Garden City with the surrounding infrastructure.
Lynnwood is a garden. It is friendly, open, and accessible. But it is also ordered and disciplined. It is conservative and family orientated.
It's also close to nature reserves and greenery such as the Faerie Glen Nature Reserve.
