Waterkloof at a glance
Waterkloof is named after the original farm that stood there when Pretoria was founded in the 19th Century. Meaning "Water Ravine", Waterkloof is a leafy, established area that is home to some of the city's most expensive real estate.
Like large parts of Pretoria, Waterkloof's streets are lined with many spectacular jacaranda trees that blossom in vibrant purple hues which illuminate the entire suburb during October. Today it is a highly sought-after and upmarket area, boasting some magnificent hilltop homesteads on Edward and Victoria Streets which boast rather impressive views of the South African capital, including the renowned Union Buildings.
The suburb bears the imprint of the British Empire as many of its streets are named after British royalty. Here, one can enjoy an idyllic round of golf at the Pretoria Country Club. It is a spectacular 18-hole golf course with fantastic amenities and sure to promise an awesome golfing experience. Several ambassadorial residences are located in the suburb.
It is the home of the noted South African soprano Mimi Coertse and is also the location of the upmarket Dube-house in the Academy Award winning film Tsotsi. Entertainment facilities, world class restaurants, magnificent attractions, and beauty as well as a range of activities make Waterkloof a top-class neighbourhood.
Waterkloof was established in 1903 as a remote township about 10km southeast of Pretoria. The area was so isolated that the South African Township and Mining and Finance Corporation had to come up with its own plans to generate electricity in the area and establish a public transport service "to town".
More than 100 years later, Waterkloof still has many conveniences and exceptional facilities, with the area now part of the "Old East" adjoining Pretoria Central.
Waterkloof Corner offers a convenient stop for basic shopping needs within Waterkloof. The words published in 1913 in Lochhead's Guide, Handbook and Directory of Pretoria still ring true: "People of Pretoria are indeed singularly fortunate in having so lovely a suburb as Waterkloof in which to make their homes, endowed as it is with a perfect climate, magnificent scenery and excellent soil - a township in which every convenience and exceptional facilities are provided for those willing to take advantage of the many benefits extended in the spirit of enterprise which has prompted its establishment."

At least 10 excellent high schools are within a 6km radius of Waterkloof, while not less than five good feeder primary schools can be found within the same precincts. The Waterkloof Homeowners Association, residents, local police and security initiatives keep the area safe and support the Integrated Crime Prevention Plan for Waterkloof.
